Favorite Music of 2021

2021 has been a year for music from long-established artists. I listened to many new artists but kept coming back to my favorites – but when they release music, this good…

2021 Favorites

Departures – Jon Foreman
From the haunting opening track, “The Ocean Beyond The Sea,” the new Jon Foreman is one of my favorite albums of the year. I’ve long been a Switchfoot and Jon Foreman fan. Foreman has a way of writing lyrics that always seem to match my own journey. Every song on this album is just top-notch. I highly recommend this album. A few of my favorites: The Ocean Beyond The Sea, A Place Called Earth, Jesus I have my Doubts, and Love Is The Rebel Song.

Interrobang – Switchfoot
Jon Foreman was really busy – to have a solo release, and a new Switchfoot released in the same year. Both albums have a different flair, but Interrobang comes in as a solid Switchfoot album. I’ve listened to Switchfoot since 1997. A few favorite songs: beloved, backwards in time, fluorescent.

Into the Mystery – NEEDTOBREATHE
Another band that I’ve listened to for years coming in with a killer album. The album includes special guests Jon Foreman, Natalie Hemby, and Carrie Underwood. Each song on this album is brilliant. A few of my favorites are: Carry Me, West Texas Wind, and Into the Mystery – though I really love every song on the album.

Nightshade – Andrew Belle
I first heard of Andrew Belle at a show with several new artists in the Nashville area. I really liked his style, but I never really listened to him a lot. This year, I kept hearing buzz about this album, so I gave it a listen and just kept listening. This album was my most listened-to album of 2021. The whole album is just a great album to put on headphones and listen to while you work.

Long Lost – Lord Huron
Another band I’ve listened to a long time that just keeps getting better. This whole album is a folk/western/indie dream. So grab your earphones, have a seat, and just soak up this album.

Honorable Mentions

While Drew Holcomb did not release a full album in 2021, he did release several singles, and they all deserve honorable mention. My top request from Siri is always, “Play Drew Holcomb” so no playlist of mine would ever be complete without Drew Holcomb.

Without a Light – Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors
Feels Like Home – Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors
Hung The Moon – Drew & Ellie Holcomb
